Sports Massage Therapy

 What is Sports Massage?

Sports Massage Therapy is a form of deep tissue massage carried out by a professional who has a thorough understanding of the anatomy and physiology of the muscular and skeletal systems of the body.It aims to improve the suppleness and flexibility of muscles and joints by eliminate toxins embedded in muscle fibres, minimize scar tissue build up and remove adhesions. It can also improve circulation which enhances cell nutrition, and reduce the recovery time of damaged or stressed tissues.

How does Sports Massage differ from other types of therapeutic massage?

Some of the basic techniques in sports massage can be the same as those used in other forms of therapeutic massage, but the therapist may apply the techniques more deeply and firmly. Some sports massage techniques are designed to shift an old or chronic injury back into its acute stage, to trigger the body's natural healing process to complete the process of repair. An example of this is the use of friction techniques, which involves applying deep pressure to tissues repeatedly, to break down fibrous adhesions and or to soften scar tissue.

When should I have a Sports Massage?

Sports Massage Therapy is of great benefit in any case of repetitive strain or muscle overuse injury. This may be due to frequent or intense sports training, or for the non athlete, even an unaccustomed bout of intense gardening!

For the sports person a Sports Massage is a great advantage

  • Prior to a sports event to enhance optimal performance - by stimulating the circulation, calming nervous tension, and improve flexibility.
  • After a sports event to relieve soreness and assist with the removal of lactic acid and other waste products.
  • During training to deal with existing injuries, and to allow you to train to your full potential and recover optimally.
